What Have I Been Up To?–Life Update

Hello, all! I know I’ve been missing posts for the past few weeks, so I thought I’d give you some insight into what has been going on in my life. Warning: I’m venting in part of this.

Most of what is keeping me way from regularly posting has to do with work. Starbucks…you probably think it’s a fairly easy job, but it’s not. Not when you’re the team lead of 11 female baristas. I average around 40 hours a week, but I swear it feels like a lot more than 40. I’ve been having some problems with a few of the girls causing drama and saying I don’t do anything. 2 things I absolutely HATE: drama and lying. All of us on this team are old enough to know that these two things get no one anywhere and are bad for all people involved. Being in the retail world, there are a lot of things we have to do that we may not want to do. For example, working weekends. This seems to be a source of the problems occurring, but like I said, it’s retail and you most likely have to work. I only get every other weekend off because of my position, otherwise I’d be there every single weekend, too. Part of the problem is that some of the girls are new, and they aren’t comfortable closing or opening. How can I fix it if I don’t get them use to closing without one of the trainers if I don’t schedule them as closers and openers? I can’t. There have been more than enough training shifts for them to learn the routine. The drama comes in when they refuse to say anything to me. How do I try to go about fixing something if they don’t say anything or if they jump over me and go to someone else? I can’t. I do a lot of things, but if they aren’t talking then I can’t help with the situation. I’ve also been hearing that I don’t do anything from them. I don’t do anything?? If I don’t do anything then why is it that I have absolutely no energy when I come home? How is it that I have no time for anything else? I do the schedule, handle emails, pull sales numbers, analyze business trends, order supplies, do the impossible set ups each season, set up and keep track of the communication log, stay on top of my game behind the bar, check for dates that get missed, order pastries and pull them to the front when they come in, build endcaps, haul 40-50 pound boxes to top shelves, etc. I don’t see that as doing nothing. Maybe it’s because they don’t see me doing it; I don’t know. What I DO know is that I try my hardest to make everything as easy on my team as I possibly can even if it means I make it harder on myself. Most of the time I feel like even with all of the stuff I do, that it’s not enough. I have people telling me it’s more than enough. If it is, then why is my team having these issues? Believe me, I’ve talked with them and asked but to no avail.

I want to create things, but I’m so tired when I get home from all of the previously mentioned things, all I want to do is either rest or sleep. My body screams that it’s tired but I keep going. My sleep is quite restless, so that makes it harder. I like my job, but the drama situation is really pulling my energy.

OK. Vent over. On to happier things that have been going on 🙂

I’ve been doing some house decorating. It’s just curtains but it’s still fun..haha.

We also had a Halloween party that we hosted at our house. I made a lot of the decorations and a majority of the food. (See! I got to create some things and felt great!) Let me show you some pictures!

I didn’t make these but aren’t they stinkin’ cute????

Pumpkins

I made a wreath that can be used for Halloween or Thanksgiving since the bat is removable! It’s been a long time since I’ve gotten to make a wreath, and I’m so proud of this one!! (Nevermind the ugly wallpaper)

Here is one side of the table that features a meat head platter (Thank you Pinterest!!) There is also beer bread, too. (You can check that post out here)

This is what you see when you walk into the kitchen. That table skirt, yep, I made it. I really love the colors. I didn’t want to stick with black and orange completely, so I threw in some different ones. I made the trail mix on the table (recipe here)—I have to say it’s awesome in my opinion but I’m biased. And the grand finale–the Jell-O shot syringes (recipe here)

That’s been about all that’s been going on in my life recently. So mainly, it’s been work related stuff keeping me from posting every week. I’m hoping after Black Friday that I can get back to my regularly scheduled posts. Oops, forgot to mention that I did do some jewelry repairs and redos so keep an eye out on instagram from those!

Until next time,

Life Update and Things to Come!!

Hello!

I thought I’d do a life update since it has been a while since my last one. Lots of things have been going on and have kept me occupied outside of the creative world.

Work:

The past couple of weeks at work have been long…long, long, long. I worked from a Wednesday to the following Thursday (yesterday) without a day off….usually 7-8 hour days…whew! I survived off of naps and a very long sleep today. Most people probably think working at a Target Starbucks isn’t that complicated…guess again! For the past few months, I’ve been working on AST training (advanced store training), which is 40 hours of training in addition to what I already have to do. I finally got signed off by our district manager!! Excited! My team lead has been promoted to another area of the store, so I’m currently running the area. I’ve got to go through interviews to make the transition official, but I’m almost a Starbucks team lead! With this comes a lot more responsibility–“with great power comes great responsibility.” HAHAHA I had to insert that…I couldn’t help it 😛 Here are some outtakes from my work life from the past couple of weeks.

All my junk

If that’s not enough insight into my job, I have two more for you all—what the back of my car currently looks like and the current state of my shoes. Prepare….for you are about to be horrified!

The back of my car...can you guess where I work?

The back of my car…can you guess where I work?

My car doesn’t normally stay in this state…I just get home and go in because I’m too tired to do anything else. I usually only see it when I go to the store and make a mental note that I need to clean out the car. Well, that note gets erased as you can tell.

My sad syrup covered shoes

That mess on my shoes is flan syrup that leaked out of the trash bag that I was in the process of changing. No real way to clean them. I’m sure there are more things on there…coffee grounds, mocha, etc.

I really like my job and enjoy working with the people there even though it does get complicated at times.

Life & Home:

I’m loving our “new” old home. Plenty of space and it’s nice and quiet. We’ve still got a lot of things that need to be done to the house, but we’re taking it a little at a time. So far we’ve been getting things to maintain the outside, so not much has been done inside. We’ve got a little garden going…the weeds are a force to be reckoned with, but we have a garden no less. I’ve got some peas growing in a planter close to the house. These are finally producing pea pods and some are almost ready to be picked!

New Pea Plants

I planted these from seeds, so it’s been fun to see the process of them growing. Glad that I’m slowly getting a greener thumb! I killed a cactus if that tells you anything.

I’ve also had a project in the works for the past month or so…probably more like two months now. My boyfriend and I are huge fans of the show “Rehab Addict.” It’s a show about a single mom who restores old houses to what they once were. In one of the episodes, she used an old door as a headboard. We looked at each other and knew what the other was thinking–“We need to do that (we don’t have a frame or headboard for our king size bed)!” So after about a good 24 hours (more but I stopped counting) of sanding and scraping, one side of the door is finished and part of the other side.

I think there were over 10 layers of paint, polyurethane, and stain on this door. Let me tell you, it is a job..not anywhere as easy as I was expecting! After I finish the other side, I’m going to stain and polyurethane this sucker, mount it, and place it behind the mattress. I’ll post it on here after I get it completed.

Last, but definitely not least, I FINALLY have my cat, CoCo with me again!!!! I’ve missed her so much! At first, I thought she was having trouble adjusting, but she is doing well and has found her perfect hiding spot. She has also displayed some skills I didn’t know she had…like climbing up and down a ladder you lean against a house. She’s always surprising me. I love her even if she’s a cross-eyed crazy sometimes!

Future Things:

I’m sure you all would have rather me addressed this first instead of the life updates, but this is how it turned out as I was typing..haha. I’m going to add a new weekly post!!! Finally, right!?!? What I have chosen to do is to change the direction of the blog a bit from one focused mainly on jewelry to more of a lifestyle blog. I’ve felt a little cramped staying in only one little area. It’s like my crafting in general–I want to do a little of everything. Same thing here–I’m building on what I already have going. So without any more of my ramblings, I’m going to introduce a Recipe of the Week post…probably on Friday, but I haven’t decided fully, so make sure you stay tuned for the changes! Feel free to like and share as many times as you like–I want to get everything out there and give my tidbits to everyone who wants them!

Until next time,

-M

Life and Business UPDATE!!

Hello, all!

It’s been an extremely busy week for me in lots and lots of ways. Good ways but nonetheless time-consuming, frustrating, great, etc., ways. So let me fill you in on what’s been going on behind the scenes in my life.

(1) Job: My primary job is at a Starbucks Target. My manager is out of town on vacation. So what could be the good news here? I’m being AST (advanced store training) trained…technically I’d be able to run the Starbucks on my own if I needed to do so. Yes, lots of responsibility involved here, as well as a lot of time. Since my manager is on vacation, I’m her for the next two weeks. Her schedule is usually early mornings, i.e., 7 AM, until later afternoon, i.e. 3:30-ish. This is absolutely killing me, because I’m not use to being at work that early. I’ve mentioned before that my schedule isn’t predictable, so I’m sure it’s obvious how this is working so far. I’ll get into the groove of it though because I like the job.

(2) Health: I’m also a little bit of a health nut..I try not to eat too terribly bad and I maintain regular exercise. I do a combination of pilates, yoga, and other workouts each day (usually about an hour). It keeps me feeling good, and relaxes me. I do have rest days, and believe me, I can be super, super lazy. Work has stressed me a little bit, and I store it in my neck/shoulder/back area. Exercise and work have affected that area, but my boyfriend doesn’t mind rubbing the lovely, painful knots out. Kudos to him for being a trooper with the shoulder rubbing!! I’ll be doing a post later on at some point about the exercise I like, but if you want to check out my absolute favorites in the meantime check out : ToneItUp, Blogilates, and Yoga With Adriene.

(3) Home: Totally awesome news here, everyone! After a year of trying to get this one particular house and get out of the renting loop, my boyfriend and I have finally closed on the property!!!! Technically, not until next Wednesday but EXCITEMENT abounds!! We both will finally have a normal work area (HIS WORK and MY WORK) instead of sharing a tiny desk or me working on the bed. I can’t say how excited either of us is about this great development.

the development in the housing situation leads me to….

(4) Moving: Lots of stuff to do here. If you’ve ever moved, you know what I mean. If you’ve separated, gone back, finally divorced, moved on with life,  moved again, and finally are moving one more time, then you truly understand how this is…HAHA. A lot of my stuff is still in my parents’ basement 3 hours away. They don’t know where most of my stuff is since they had a water line explode in the basement. Hmmm, sounds fun, eh? We have basic stuff, but not much other than that. His mom and grandparents have been amazingly good to us and purchased some furniture for the house. The current owners of the house have also given us some furniture as well, so we won’t be sitting on crates exactly. Couple moving with my work schedule and you get one stressed out individual. I’m EXCITED, so most of it isn’t bad stress…the bad stress is me trying to figure out how to do it all and keep my creative side going at the same time.

All of these are reasons you’ve not seen a large amount of my work on here. I’ve not had time to try to create my jewelry, in addition to adding more ideas here. So at least for the next couple of weeks, bear with me as I still post my regulars (Food for Thought Mondays and Weekly Wednesdays) with the occasional life updates. Like I’ve mentioned before, I’m terrible with keeping up with blogging, but this time is going to be different!

Before I sign off and continue the day, I will share my latest creation that I’ve listed on Etsy in The Prickly Pear shop…

I’ve got another idea going, so if I get time today, I’ll be working on that as well!

Until next time,

-M

It’s Been a Rough Few Days…

Do you ever get that feeling of, “oh no, not again…I can’t get sick?” Well, I had that feeling when it was close to time for me to get off work this past Saturday. I felt the need to go blow my nose and BAM! I knew I was sick. That was when that feeling hit me. Crap.

If you’ve read my first post or my about me section, you know I work at a Target Starbucks (I also do sales floor work when I get scheduled). Imagine beginning to get sick and that’s the area you primarily work. Not good, right? Nope it’s definitely not. Fortunately I did have Sunday off, but I really got sick on Monday and have been battling this cold/sinus/allergy combo since then. The past two days were ones that had me getting up at around 6:30 A.M. to be at work for a nice 8.5 hours. No rest for the weary.

I’m sure a lot of people would ask why I was going to work doing the job I do when I’m sick. Well, you want the short answer? Here it is: If I don’t go into work, I don’t get paid. It’s also not a stomach virus. It makes the day difficult to get through when you’re feeling miserable and sneaking into the back room to go blow your nose or cough something up. (Sorry for the details, but I know you’ve all experienced the same symptoms at some point or another). Not all people have salaried jobs. Not all people have understanding management (My manager is great, btw). Not all people can afford to miss a day of work. I’m one of those who can’t afford to miss a day because I have bills to pay, and my current pay rate isn’t at the point where I can miss a day and still survive. Always be understanding of this when you run into someone in retail or at a restaurant that’s stopped up–we have to be there because that’s how we survive and continue to pay our bills.

I’m slightly getting better now after having taken Sudafed and guaifenesin regularly (every 4 hours) and blowing my nose almost constantly. Hopefully, the progress continues, and I get over this mess soon…I’m tired of being friends with these:

Puffs Tissue

I’ve done some creating, but I’ve got to get the pictures uploaded and listed on Etsy. I’ll share them with you soon!

Until next time,
